I jumped to an SEO start-up, learned how to optimize content for search, and then hopped over to an ad agency as a community manager for several well-known brands. After getting my hands dirty with strategy, I made it my full-time gig. I've worked with Fortune s, neighborhood nonprofits, and a bunch of brands in between.
