Former Army Aviator, Lieutenant Colonel, he had enough time to retire right after the Congress stopped Reservists from drawing retirement pay before age 60. During the flying portion of his Army life, John flew Cavalry Utility and Support Cargo helicopters in most of the “hot†zones during the early part of the 21st century. Later in his career he was a project manager (uniformed) for various Army Aviation “human engineered cockpit†programs. His work resulted in the Army being the first service to separate the cockpit from attack aircraft, resulting in all services, other than the Air Force, to utilize unmanned aircraft for attack and bombing roles. The systems are robust enough to safely carry people, but all services still use manned aircraft to transport people (living or dead). John is the son of a late Army Aviator, Josef, Army Utility and Attack Helicopter Pilot, US Cavalry. One of the "last of the Huey, Apache and Blackhawk guys." Josef, also a Vanderbilt grad, was briefly Enlisted in Armor before becoming an Aviation Officer. Josef died, peacefully in a hospital, a few short years before the novel begins. John still misses his father dearly and still gets choked up trying to talk about his father. He does not have his dad’s pictures back out yet. John’s mother, Mary, is a retired Executive Secretary, former President of Professional Secretaries International, and instrumental in elevating the role of Executive Secretary to the equivalent of Executive Officer for Executive Vice Presidents and above. John’s son, “Tagâ€, Jonathan, is an Army Judge Advocate General (Lawyer, JD Vanderbilt University, Computer Engineering BS, University of Illinois) stationed in an undisclosed location in Asia, advising a Special Operations Task Force Commander on legal aspects of Peace Keeping Operations. Tag has an exclusive girlfriend back in Tennessee, an Electrical Engineer five years his senior. Tag contacts his father whenever he can and John stops whatever he is doing to speak to his son. John’s interest in women: First and foremost, she must be bright. Education level is irrelevant, brightness counts. Prefers ladies with dark hair, dark eyes, race immaterial, physically fit (slender not required but preferred). Until recently he has preferred women his age or older, but has warmed up to women within ten years of his age. Economic conservative, social liberal, John voted Libertarian when he can.  Otherwise he votes with the candidate who most closely matches his attitude at the time. Anti-'government marriage', wishes that the government would get out of the marriage business and has vowed to never apply for a marriage license again. Seeks a dedicated, monogamous relationship. A like of safe/sane bondage on the part of the woman is welcome.
