One of these was the Pry family. On an eastern rise of the creek near Keedysville, just off the Boonsboro-Sharpsburg Turnpike, Philip Pry and his brother Samuel built a two-story brick house in 1844. Three years later the brothers purchased a large grist mill north of the house at the junction of the Antietam and Little Antietam Creeks.

About the Pry House. Philip and Samuel Pry were brothers who inherited their father's farm near Keedysville, Maryland, in 1828. Philip built his house on a rise on the east bank of Antietam Creek in 1844, using bricks fired on the property. Samuel lived just north of Philip and operated a mill.

Samuel Pry rebuilt the two-story stone mill with brick, and the mill assumed the shape it still has. The first two levels are the coursed stone of the original mill, which is fully exposed on the creek side and pierced with segmentally arched openings. There was a small corner fireplace on the second level, probably where the office was.
