I am Curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books at The Walters Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland, a position I took up in 1997. Prior to that I was British Academy Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of History of Art, Cambridge University, and before that I was Assistant Curator of Manuscripts at The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. My mission in my current position is to bring art and people together for enjoyment, discovery, and learning. I do this by creating exhibitions, by teaching, by writing, and most of all by providing information on, and access to, the manuscripts under my care at The Walters. I also direct various digital programs. The Archimedes Palimpsest Project has been ongoing for ten years, and we are now looking forward to hard copy publications and an exhibition at The Walters in the fall of 2011. With the help of NEH grants, The Walters is creating digital surrogates of its wonderful collection of illuminated manuscripts. The images are released under a Creative Commons share-alike non-commercial license, and are presented in a variety of formats, on FLICKR, on ISSUU, on the Walters Website, and in their raw form. Most of our Islamic manuscripts are now fully available, and in the next two years we will be releasing our English, Dutch, German, Byzantine, Armenian and Ethiopian Manuscripts. ,Free Medieval Manuscripts,Art Historyread more ...read less ...
