VW HISTORY; Robert Skinner Quick summary of "Who is Robert Skinner". My VW path started at an early age of 16/17 years old when I bought my first Volkswagen in Alameda, California in the San Francisco Bay Area! It was a 1966' Panel Bus and it's still in my possesion today, 28 years later. My first VW job was at REEVCO in Bertkeley, CA. as the clean-up kid, hold this for me, clean this mess up, take out the trash kinda position. But with time and my heavy interest in VW's, I was able to help more in the shop and gain the knowledge from my peers. I ended up migrating over to TIMCO, a Porsche & Volkswagen transmission shop. My job was to tear-down and clean everything up so that rebuilders could inspect and mic every piece to see if it was worth saving or rebuilding. I pressed gears, bead blasted gears, washed & inspected gears and whatever else I was asked to do. It was a really fun job, except for the smell of burnt gear oil. Still to this day, I hate that smell! This is when I heard about a split beetle sitting along side a house in Berkeley and had to get it. A couple days later, after some minor negotiations the car was mine. It's now 1986 and I own my first 1950' split beetle! I was in a VW car club called "West Coast V-Dubs", but I wanted more out of a club than just hanging out at the local pizza joint and seeing the same thing week/week. This is the time when we started our own car club out of Alameda called; "Cal Motion V-Dubs". We offered discounts with local company's like Buggy House, Kent Engineering and H&H Supply to get our members good deals on parts to restore there Volkswagens. Cal-Motion V-Dubs car club grew dramatically with thousands of members from 1984-1991. The final count was over 2,700 members and 7 chapters of the club throughout Northern California. I was now working at Kent Engineering a few blocks away from the Buggy House as a sales/counter person selling VW parts and doing my own "Mobile Mechanic VW Service" on the side. Those were some of the best times of my life! It's now 1991 and I met my wife and we had our first child. Whoa, this changes everything! I've been an entrepreneur my whole life, since walking the streets of Redwood City and Alameda mowing people's lawns as a kid. I continued to do VW side jobs(vw scene was tappering off in the 90's), but had to get a real job. I decided to open a shop in Oakland, Ca. and do full resto work; "Skinner Restorations". I worked on everything, not just VW's. Whatever would pay the bills, I'd fix it! Chevy's, Ford's, Chryslers, it didn't matter. I'd do the restoration! I've always known that restoring old objects was my passion and it's what made me feel good. Why not make a career out of what you love to do and get paid doing it. We moved to Vacaville, California in 1993 and opened a Collision Shop in town called; Commercial Auto Body. We worked very, very hard for 11 straight years, fixing all makes & models. Growing the companies sales, year after year. The building in front of our company came up for sale. It was 4x the size of our current location and we were very happy to make an offer and hopefully purchase the property. Well, everything came together and they accepted our offer. This is our 7th year in the new location and we couldn't be happier. It's turned out to be an excellent location for a body shop for the families in Vacaville and surround area's that need our professional servcies. In the 18 years of working at this company, VW restorations have never stopped. Yes, they slowed down alot, but I always had my customers, friends and family to count on when it comes to Volkswagens. We have expanded our VW restoration services to the community and hope to keep satisfying them all with our professional restorations and repairs. Big or small, I'd be glad to help anyone out today with there project. This is my current status, So... Let the History Continue!! I love my family and friends! Life is good
