Murder of Linda Cook

The murder of Linda Cook was committed in Portsmouth on 9 December 1986. The subsequent trial led to a miscarriage of justice when Michael Shirley, an 18-year-old Royal Navy sailor, was wrongly convicread more...ted of the crime and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1992 his case was highlighted as one of 110 possible miscarriages of justice in a report presented to the Home Office by the National Association of Probation Officers and justice groups Liberty and Conviction. His conviction was eventually quashed in 2003 by the Court of Appeal after the DNA profile extracted from semen samples recovered from the victim's body was proven not to be his. Cook's murder took place shortly after six sexual assaults had been committed in the Buckland area of the city, and the killer was initially dubbed the Beast of Buckland by the news media. When police revealed that footprint evidence had been recovered and launched a search for matching shoes, the case became known as the "Cinderella murder". Because of the brutal nature of the murder and the preceding sex attacks, Hampshire police were under public pressure to quickly make an arrest.read less...

Michael Wherley

Michael J. "Mike" Wherley is a 3-time World Champion and 2-time Olympian in the sport of rowing. He started rowing at the University of Minnesota in 1990, before rowing at Penn AC Rowing Association aread more...nd then the U.S. National Team from 1997 to 2004. Wherley was part of the U.S. Men's 8+ that won three straight World Championships in 1997–1999. He placed 5th in the Men's 4- at the Sydney Olympics in 2000, which was won by Sir Steven Redgrave and the crew from Great Britain. Wherley won two more medals in the U.S. Men's 8+, before ending his National Team career at the Athens Olympics in 2004 with a 10th-place finish in the Men's 4-. Wherley later won the 2008 Boat Race with the University of Oxford and was inducted into the National Rowing Hall of Fame in 2014. He currently is president at Penn AC Rowing Association and lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Janet Distel, and their daughter.read less...
