Hyobong Hangnul

Hyobong Hangnul (1888—1966) was a Korean Jogye Seon master who was the former head of the Jogye Order. The master of the late Kusan Sunim, Hyobong was the guiding teacher of several temples in Korearead more...—including Songgwang-sa and Haein-sa. Stephen Batchelor has called him, "One of the most remarkable Buddhist teachers of this century in Korea." Hyobong was also the first Korean individual to serve as a judge for the Japanese Imperial government, though he resigned his position after being troubled with having sentenced a man to death. Having told no one of his resignation, he took to selling toffee in rural towns and eventually came to ordain as a sunim under Sŏktu Sunim. Hyobong went on to live as a traveling monk, visiting monastery after monastery for many years. He died in the posture of zazen while at P'Yoch'chung monastery in 1966.read less...

George Hoban

George William Hoban was an American football player, coach, and official. He served as the head football coach at Lehigh University for one season in 1942, compiling a record of 5–2–1. Hoban playread more...ed football there as a Halfback at Lehigh from 1912 to 1914 before graduation in 1915. During World War I he coached team for the 304th Infantry Regiment and at Camp Devens. After working for Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Maryland, Hoban moved to the Friends School of Baltimore in 1921 to teach history and coach. In 1922, he moved to St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. Hoban died on February 2, 1943 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania of a heart attack while driving his car.read less...
