When I have the pianist play a waltz for us in a department store, or find that corner of an empty cafe and dance cheek to cheek, there's a part of me that both embraces the romance and laughs at the sweet irony of it all. I love to travel and explore on foot, catching the smells and flavors of someplace different and new, but sometimes the best vacation is a morning spent with breakfast in bed and a leisurely walk downtown. I love to discuss things such as philosophy, politics, music, and history, but there's something wonderful about quietly greeting the first light of dawn after talking throughout the night and wondering where that time went. I've lived in California for most of my life, but the time I've spent seeing the world has had a profound influence on my thinking. I've done road races such as Bay to Breakers and Wharf to Wharf, gone skiing in the mountains, snorkeled in the Pacific, and spent plenty of time peddling or running or climbing and not going anywhere, but the races were as much about cheering the bands that lined the streets as about the accomplishment of completing them, and it was okay to hit a mogul the wrong way and end up with my ski gear forming a mural across the slopes, and the not-going-anywhere was an excuse to watch some television program or DVD that I hadn't yet seen. I am passionate about opera and musical theatre, but I've got childhood memories of folk music being the soundtrack to our family road trips, and I'll never forget the rock concerts I've taken in over the years. I love and appreciate strong and independent people, but take joy in playful kisses and long hugs and just holding someone because one of us needs it.
