Bill Wilson (convict)

Bill Wilson was a farmer in Blout County, Alabama. Wilson married his wife Jenny Wade in 1900, and they had three children. 19 months into the marriage Jenny would leave Wilson taking their third chilread more...d with her to return to her family. Wilson and the two older children would move into the home of his father Si Wilson. During the divorce proceedings Jenny Wilson, along with their third child would vanish. Shortly before Jenny and the child's disappearance another local girl, Jane McClendon, would go missing leaving speculation that foul play was involved in both of the disappearances. In 1912 Dolphus Tidwell and his son would discover skeletal remains of an adult and a child while fishing near Wilson's father's home. Believing the bones were part of an Indigenous burial mound they reburied the bones and returned home. A farmhand by the name of Jim House believed that the remains found were not those of Indigenous people but were his neighbor Jenny Wilson and the child. House claimed that in 1908, he saw Jenny visit the home of Si Wilson carrying a basket. Then the next morning House claimed to have seen footprints leading to the river, which lead him to children's clothing and blood on a rock. This information was picked up by the county solicitor James Embry. Embry called a grand jury and indicted Bill Wilson for the murder of his wife and child. Despite a lack of evidence, on December 18, 1915 Bill Wilson was found guilty of first degree murder of his wife and child. He was sentenced to life imprisonment to be served at Alabama's Wetumpka State Penitentiary. In 1916, Dr. Aleš Hrdlička, curator of the physical anthropology of the Smithsonian Institution, declared the bones to be parts of at least four or five individuals. By 1916 the public acknowledged Wilson's innocence. Bill Wilson would not be released until 1918 when Wilson's former appeal attorney tracked down Jenny Wilson and their daughter, and had her sign an affidavit.read less...
