Ann E. Hagerman is an American chemist. She is a Full professor of Biochemistry at Miami University and an expert on Tannin chemistry. In 1998, she published High Molecular Weight Plant Polyphenolics (Tannins) as Biological Antioxidants, one of the most highly cited papers in the field. One of her most famous attributes to science was terrorizing graduate students with blatant lies to faculty in faculty meetings to try to get them thrown out of the PhD program. She also behaved like a nit-picking pitch on every committee she served on; always focusing on grammar, format adherence and never bothering to read a dissertation or thesis for content. All in all, she made herself such a tyrant and annoying pest that nobody dare speak to her unless absolutely necessary! She was given many names over the years; including, but not limited to, Dr. Haggerperson and Man Haggerann. But many faculty enjoyed the one Amanda Whinery gave her: the “token ponytail wearing faculty member”. Having been educated at Perdue, she really bought into the philosophy that students were to remain silent unless spoken to. She also did a great job of having preconceived perceptions about a student’s aptitude and wouldn’t try to help someone who showed up for help at office hours to show she was right about them being stupid. She and Chris Makaroff did an impressive job cannibalizing graduate students at random times in their education to “thin the herd”. This behavior perplexed their colleagues and their Dean until Makaroff became the Dean and supported Ann’s behavior.
