Alexander Monro of Craiglockhart and Cockburn was a Scottish anatomist, physician and medical educator. Munro was from the distinguished Monro of Auchenbowie family. His major achievements included, describing the lymphatic system, providing the most detailed elucidation of the musculo-skeletal system to date and introducing clinical medicine into the curriculum. He is known for the Monro–Kellie doctrine on intracranial pressure, a hypothesis developed by Monro and his former pupil George Kellie, who worked as a surgeon in the port of Leith.read less...

Alexander Moncrieff (Secession minister)

Alexander Moncrieff (1695–1761) was a Scottish Presbyterian minister. He was the son of Matthew Moncrieff of Culfargie and Margaret Mitchell. His paternal grandfather, also Alexander Moncrieff, was read more...a well known minister of Scoonie. He was educated at Perth Grammar School and St Leonard's College, St Andrews. He graduated with an M.A. and then attended a course of theology at Leiden under John a Marck and Wesselius. He was licenenced by the Presbytery of Perth 29 April 1719 and called 26 April, and by Presbytery jure devoluto, 24 August, and ordained 14 September 1720. He sympathised with Ebenezer Erskine, and the Commission of Assembly on 9 August 1733 suspended him and three associates from the exercise of their ministry. As they refused obedience, on 16 November the Commission declared them no longer ministers of the Church. Moncrieff with his brethren met at Gairney Bridge 6 December 1733, and formed the Associate Presbytery. The General Assembly of 1734 reponed him to office. From 1734 to 1740 he preached from the parish church pulpit, occupied the manse, received the stipend, yet protested against the jurisdiction of the Church, declined to attend Presbytery meetings, or in any way to be amenable to ecclesiastical authority. He was finally deposed by the Assembly on 15 May 1740. He was appointed by the Associate Presbytery Professor of Divinity in February 1742. He joined with those who were against the Burgess Oath, and was one of the founders of the General Associate Synod 10 April 1747. He died on 7 October 1761.read less...

Alexander Moncrieff (minister)

Alexander Moncrieff, the youngest son of Matthew Moncrieff of Kintillo, was born in 1613, who, during a long and active life, took a prominent part in the ecclesiastical history of the seventeenth cenread more...tury. He was laureated at the University of Edinburgh, at the age of twenty-two, in 1635, and was a preacher and on the leet for Kirkcaldy about six years afterwards. On 14 June 1643 he was presented by Charles I to the parish of Scoonie, and admitted on 26 September following. He was a member of the Commission of Assembly in 1647; subscribed the Solemn League and Covenant, 31 December 1648; and was one of the Commissioners appointed to visit the University of St Andrews in January 1649. He gave in a protest to the Presbytery against the public Resolutions on 3 December 1651. He was named by Cromwell as one of the commissioners for authorising ministers to enjoy their benefices, etc., in the provinces of Perth, Fife, and Angus. He presented a petition from himself and other ministers of Fife against the Toleration and other encroachments, and having thus made himself obnoxious to the Government was imprisoned on a charge of praying for the King. He along with nine other ministers who had met to draw up an address to the King were arrested and confined in the Castle of Edinburgh on 23 August 1660. On 12 July 1661 he was inhibited by the King and Parliament from exercising any office within the parish, to which he was confined. A decreet was passed against him for holding conventicles, 16 July 1674, and on 23rd the magistrates of Perth were appointed to arrest him. He died 6 October 1688, after having several times eluded the search of his persecutors, and was buried in Greyfriars, Edinburgh. The epitaph to his memory and his wife's there has faded. His grandson, also Alexander Moncrieff, was one of the first four ministers of the Secession Church.read less...
