Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa represents the people of Hawaii's First Congressional District in Congress. A fourth-generation Japanese-American whose great-grandparents emigrated to Hawaii in the 1880s to work on the Waianae sugar plantation, Colleen got involved in politics to fight for low-income communities like the ones on Oahus Leeward Coast, where she grew up. After earning her B.A., M.A. and J.D. from the University of Hawaii, she was a labor lawyer for over 30 years, thriving in a traditionally male-dominated area of practice.A dedicated and courageous leader described as a progressive Democrat with a talent for building consensus, Colleen has repeatedly taken on powerful special interests to protect the rights of working families, children, women, and Native Hawaiians. Since being elected to the Hawaii State Senate in 1998 — her first run for political office — she has gained a reputation for being an outspoken advocate willing to challenge the status quo. She's been called a catalyst for action — unafraid to be heard and to shake things up when something needs to get done.In 2006, Colleen was named president of the Hawaii State Senate, making her the first woman to lead either house of the Hawaii State Legislature, and the first Asian-American woman in the nation to lead a state legislative body.A graduate of St. Andrew's Priory ('69) in Honolulu and the University of Hawaii at Manoa (B.A. in Economics & Sociology, '73 and M.A. in Sociology, '75), Colleen received her JD in 1977 from the William S. Richardson School of Law.Colleen and her husband, John, reside in Ko Olina with their dog, Little.
