Vern entered the US Air Force and received a commission in . His first assignment was at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio where he served as an electronic engineer. He developed electronic countermeasures and airborne computer systems. He was reassigned in to Langley AFB, Virginia where he provided engineering support to the Air Force's Tactical Computer Facility, which developed, tested, and certified tactical computer communications software. He left active duty in and became a reserve officer. In he was assigned to the st Aerial Port Squadron at Langley AFB, Virginia and served as the Squadron Operations Officer. He was called to active duty in support of Operation DESERT STORM at Dover AFB, Delaware. He managed the storage, retrieval, and loading of air cargo. He was discharged in at the rank of Major. After leaving active duty, he went to work at the Bible Broadcasting Network in Chesapeake, Virginia as a Broadcast Engineer. He installed and maintained the electronic equipment used in operating a satellite-fed network of FM radio stations. He went to work at the Satellite Systems Corporation in Virginia Beach, Virginia in where he was the Production Manager building satellite up-link equipment used in commericial radio stations. He became a Mortgage Loan Officer with the Southeast Mortgage Banking Company in Virginia Beach, Virginia in and specialized in originating VA guaranteed loans. Since , he has been an "Over The Road" truck driver with of those years as an OwnerOperator. He has logged over . million safe miles traveled. In addition to his trucking business, he has formed several home-based businesses and serves as a mentor to others who are looking to become Financially Independent.
