I am a senior lecturer at Glasgow Caledonian Universitys Centre for Learning Enhancement and Academic Development (GCU LEAD). I'm a tutor and module leader for the universitys accredited programmes in learning and teaching, and I mentor experienced staff towards professional recognition as part of the AcceleRATE framework. I joined GCU from concurrent roles at Bangor University and the Higher Education Academy. I trained initially in art history (music and architecture), and later in rural geography. I have spoken at many conferences in the UK and North America, and I held a two-year visiting scholarship at Cambridge University. I have also served on the Council of the Royal Musical Association. I have undertaken commercial research for Waitrose into agricultural sustainability, and have worked with the Welsh Assembly Government on efficient dairy systems. I also have an interest in the relationships between research, practice and policy. My primary concerns within the field of education are inquiry-based learning, mentoring, and coaching for peak performance (athletics and music). Away from work, my hobbies include fell running, bird watching and playing folk fiddle.
