As a family physician and formerly overweight person, I am acutely aware of the suffering caused by failure to achieve a healthy weight. In clinical practice, I saw that a prescription for portion control and regular exercise were almost universally meaningless to my overweight patients. They needed thoughtful exploration of how and why they were to integrate these new life style changes, a feat impossible in the clinical setting. Feeling impotent to affect significant improvement in the health of my patients, I left clinical medicine to serve community health with coaching. This novel approach succeeds by asking clients to reconcile their physical health within the bigger picture of their lives. Weight loss coaching can be used as an excellent adjunct to any current weight loss strategy being employed from Weight Watchers to post bariatric surgery.
