I design and make neon sculpture. There are three elements that attract me to working with neon as an art form--the glow of the light, the limited color palette and the ability to create forms. I want the viewer to experience the beauty of the form and color--to see neon in a new way. When developing a new piece, I play with the glass exploring and trying different combinations until I settle on a form I want to explore. Then I consider what the form says to me and develop the piece from those thoughts. I often use layers to create texture--a background to feature the cast light from the tube or a layer of tubes or acrylic to bend the light. My first experience with art making was painting interpretive landscapes and emotions. After completing two years of art school at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, I went on to study television production at CSULB and graduated with a degree in Journalism. After school I started creating titles for television--at first by hand and then on the computer using motion graphics software. I started working with neon as an art media in 2004. I took a neon class through the Museum of Neon Art taught by Michael Flechtner. My first projects were bent by him. I wanted to explore a free form style and he encouraged me to try bending. I began studying the craft of bending with Flechtner in 2005.
