Like most writers, I discovered my calling shortly after I figured out how to read. Unfortunately, I never wanted to write novels. Neither did I want to become a journalist. But eventually I discovered copywriting: the art of building bridges between folks with something to sell/communicate, and folks who want/need to hear about it. I adored it. Which makes me really good. I gained most of my marketing and fundraising chops at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. For them I wrote a decade of fundraising campaigns, direct mail packages, internal communications, advertorials, and a well-loved internal staff newsletter. In 2009 I developed and created a customer/donor eNewsletter for them – a project that raised over $80K in incremental sales and donation revenue in its first six months. Since then I’ve written for arts organizations, music festivals, public television, health-care charities, consultants, insurance agencies, life coaches and more. In 2011 I wrote a subscription campaign for Toronto’s Canadian Stage that tripled ticket sales to new patrons.
