I'm an engineer turned technology entrepreneur now social entrepreneur. My background includes having been a rocket scientist, founding two of the foremost optical character recognition companies, and developing a successful line of reading machines for the blind. I now run my deliberately nonprofit technology company, Benetech. Benetech concentrates on applying technology to challenging problems facing our society, including literacy for people with disabilities and human rights monitoring and analysis. I've been lucky enough to win some exciting awards, including the 2006 MacArthur Fellowship, the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship in 2004 and 2006, and being named a Schwab Social Entrepreneur of 2003.
