My full name is: Dawn Victoria Mee Wah Stewart-Lookkin my favorite color is: Yellow Born and raised in NYC, I love making things with my hands! Little things that make me smile and can fit in my pocket. Every day I wear at least some yellow or orange. I graduated from smith college in 2005 with a BA in studio art (installation sculpture) and a minor in women studies (asian women of color) and credit family and friends for my passion for hand craft. I have always either painted, sketched, sculpted, printed, sewed and crafted in some way since before I can remember. Its interesting to me that I crochet so much now even though I learned by teaching myself with how-to books only 5 years ago. Its incredible what a new skill will bring you! The very first time I sold any of my crafts was during the summer of 2007 when I was an apprentice at Bread & Puppet Theater (large scale street theater) & made funky finger puppets with found buttons and the yarn I had on hand to sell in the “cheap art bus.†Several years later, I’m focusing on this full time. Art, the arts, crafts and sewing have always been apart of both sides of my family. My maternal grandfather (grampy) was a painter as well as an art teacher. Both of my grandmothers were highly skilled seamstresses in their own right making clothes from scatch for their children as well as their children’s children (and sometimes doll clothes too!). Though my paternal grandmother (apo) was completely illiterate in Chinese and English, she could sew up any dress, and crochet based on photos of crocheted items. My maternal grandmother (grammy) sewed intricate dresses for my mother. So many of my cousins and aunts on both sides sew, crochet, knit, quilt, I really see crafting as part of my heritage.
