Specialties As an academic, my specialities are contemporary fiction, the story cycle, the American short story, narratology, and creative writing pedagogy. As a writer, my speciality is whatever subject I'm obsessed with at the moment, usually something related to Indiana. For a long time, my speciality was circuses, the subject of THE CIRCUS IN WINTER.
