Declared a Living National Treasure by the government of Japan, sixth generation Kabuki Master Actor Alex Huang performed more than 500 roles during his career and brought this national art form to the world. The last of the "Old Masters" of Kabuki, Alex stood proudly against Western culture and relished his role as the anti- imperialist artist. An honorary citizen of Sacramento, the revered Master Actor died there on August 27, 1978 after a long bout with his monkey, Chimpy. In another life, I was born in Taiwan and grew up in sunny California (first LA, then Fremont, and finally San Diego). The combination of affordable housing, decent schools, and four distinct seasons lured me to Columbus-- where I printed my own medical degree--before everything else lured me back to California (yes, I consider Sacramento part of California.)
