I've never been a person to do things the easy way. After only a year of college I decided the classroom wasn't right for me and joined the Marine Corps reserve. I expected to serve one weekend a month, two weeks a year but upon my return from training I was told "don't get a job, don't go to school, you're going to war." It was those twelve words that have lead me to where I am today. While the Marines may not compare to an Ivy League school, there are business lessons at every turn. The Corps taught me how to be a leader, how to have initiative, how to assess risks and find the best outcome and, most importantly, how to have faith that I can achieve any goal I set my mind to. A little over a year after hearing that I would be going to war, I was back from my first deployment. I was fortunate enough to land a job in the Parts and Accessories marketing department of Harley-Davidson. Taking what I had learned from the Marines, I was able to quickly make my mark on the company and went from intern to interim manager in a matter of months. I continued to grow within the company and moved to the Retail Environment Group, where I oversaw multi-million dollar projects and the entire Buell brand. My time with Harley would end as I was called to serve a second tour of duty in Iraq. Returning from my second deployment I decided to take a different route and opened my own business, Rebel. Started in the worst economic climate since the great depression, Rebel was able to quickly gain notoriety as a leader in the social media space. Working with dozens of companies in all shapes and sizes, Rebel helped companies learn how to utilize social media to grow their business. While my foray into entrepreneurship was an amazing learning experience, I found myself yearning to be able to focus on creating great campaigns, and not having to worry about running a company.
