In July of 2008 I left Washington D.C. to pursue my passion for fly-fishing and conservation. I started The Middle River Group in order to provide strategic and tactical marketing, communications and advocacy expertise to the conservation and wildlife management community and the hunting, fishing and shooting sports industry. I also wrote an outdoors column for the News Virginian (Waynesboro). My columns explore national conservation issues and efforts as well as offering information on hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation. At The Trust for Public Land I was responsible for establishing stronger ties with the hunting and fishing community in support of TPL projects and programs and strengthening TPL's involvement in existing federal programs, particularly those involving fish and wildlife habitat. At the Izaak Walton League of America my responsibilities included planning, oversight and implementation of the League’s conservation education and outreach programs, policy advocacy and development of the League’s legislative agenda and strategies. I have been involved in coalition building and grass roots organizing for much of his professional career. I have been active in creation of the American Wildlife Conservation Partners, FishNet, and the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership. My volunteer activities reflect my passion for fishing and conservation. I serve on the Board of the American Fly Fishing Trade Association and the steering committee of the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture, a National Fish Habitat Partnership. I have also served as the Virginia representative on Trout Unlimited’s National Leadership Council and on the boards of the Valley Conservation Council, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, the Federation of Fly Fishers and Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing. I spent twelve years as a public affairs officer in the Unites States Navy Reserve retiring at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Specialties The Middle River Group is a strategic and tactical marketing, communications and advocacy firm focusing on conservation issues, especially when those issues affect fish, wildlife and natural resources. We provide diverse business expertise to the conservation and wildlife management community and the hunting, fishing and shooting sports industry. Our strength lies in policy development, messaging, coalition building, and political ground-truthing.

Tom Sadler

Verona, VA

Also known as: TomSadler

Tom Sadler lives in Verona, Va., in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. OWAA is fortunate to find someone of Toms caliber to lead our organization into a demanding new era, said Mark Taylor, OWAA president and outdoor writer for The Roanoke Times. This era requires that we adapt to an ever-changing media landscape in order to best serve our existing membership and attract new members. Tom is more than equal to the task at hand. We had a number of excellent candidates, but Toms experience in the outdoor and conservation arenas complemented by his vast professional network best positions him to lead the OWAA, continued Taylor. I believe he will guide our group to new heights. Sadler owns and runs a consulting firm, The Middle River Group, where he focuses on advocating for outdoor recreation and conservation. He launched the company in after moving to Verona from Washington, D.C. Prior to that, Sadler was the director of program development for the Trust for Public Land. He also served as the conservation director for the Izaak Walton League of America and was president of the Congressional Sportsmens Foundation. Sadler has worked as an outdoor columnist for the New Virginian in Waynesboro and writes about the outdoors and conservation on his blog, Dispatches from Middle River (middleriverdispatch.com). He also works occasionally as a fly-fishing guide for Mossy Creek Fly Fishing in Harrisonburg, Va. My passion for the outdoors and conservation are exceeded only by my desire to share those passions with others, Sadler said. OWAA members are the best communicators of those passions. To be able to help OWAA do more of that by growing the membership, increasing our supporter base and helping our members and supporters become successful is really an exciting opportunity.
