I'm a guy with diverse interests (that's code for "way too many") and anenthusiasmfor any project I find myself working on. I love collecting and listening to music, watching interesting television shows and movies and pushing myself to be active and creative. I continually seek to learn new things and try new activites. I also have a healthy interest in new technology, especially with regards to computers, other electronic gadgets and the web. Google is serving as my hub for producing and linking to content that I find interesting. It's a bit like a blog in that respect, but unlike a blog my public posts won't all be on a single subject. I'm starting from scratch in trying to build a concrete online presence, so at the moment all my content is posted publicly. I would like to eventually consolidate my posts into different circles (baring Google developing a category system for posts), but for the meantime I'm going to just keep everything public. To try and keep the range of public posts and content under control, I'm going to limit myself to certain topics. Please follow me if any of these seem interesting to you The topics are Music Reviews, impressions and recommendations I'm a former amateur musician (played trumpet for about years) that has turned into an obsessive collector of music, both physical and digital. I constantly seek out new music and make extensive use of online music subscription services to further develop my taste and collection. My favorite genre of music is metal, although I try out stuff in many genres electronic, hip-hop, classical, darkalternative folkcountry, alternative rock, some pop here and there as well as far-out experimental stuff. I like to spread the word about music and so you'll see me writing impressions and giving recommendations for different albums. Sometimes I'll write about the topic of music from a more philosophical standpoint. The recent US release of Spotify, a free play-what-you-want music streaming service, will also be quite helpful in my music posts, as I can share playlists and suggest different albums that readers here can try legally at no risk (in other words buying something they end up not enjoying). ComputersSocial Media and the WebElectronics Fun news, commentary and general musings As part of Generation Y, I grew up in that unique period time where personal computers and the commercial internet were introduced. I've been in front of a computer ever since elementary school. As such, I watched as social interaction on the 'net evolved and participated in many of its iterations BBS systems, IRC chat, HTML-based webpages, online forums, blogs, Facebook and now Google. Closely tied to this is my love of electronic devices. This began with my infatuations with video games and progressed as gadgets became cheaper and more impressive. My iPhone is always with me and being able to wirelessly stream music over the G network and pump it into my car stereo is one of the coolest things I've ever come across Posts will typically be sharing new developments and why I think they're cool. As always, I am prone to philosophical musings, so that will occasionally work its way in (see my meta discussions on Google for an obvious example). R eflections on Pop Entertainment Podcast about television and other visual entertainment mediums Reflections on Pop Entertainment is a podcast that I co-host with my wonderfulfianceMeghan, who I've known and has been a close friend since my sophomore year in college. She has taught me a lot about the arts and popular culture and our continual conversations about different things led us to give podcasting a try. The podcastfocuses mainly on analysis and discussion of television shows, be they reality competitions or scripted dramas. The podcast is tied to a blog, which when combined gives us an area to discuss our thoughts and insights with a public audience. We try to set ourselves apart from other podcasts by approaching things from a big picture point of view instead of being a "blow-by-blow" discussion, concentrating on specific themes or events and how they fit into a particular show. This allows us to throw in some scholarly analysis from time to time, which we enjoy working in when we can. Most of the posts for this stuff will be a copy-paste of the text in the blog, with a link provided for convenience. I'm not looking to consolidate our podcast audience on my Google page, so for show impressions and general chatter, I welcome you to check out and follow our twitter account . Professional Career Physics Professionally I'm a graduate student in physics working toward a Ph.D, a goal that I've been working towards for five years now. As such, it makes sense to incorporate some of my professional life into this profile. I won't bore anyone by posting exact details of my research, but if I publish anything or come across something intriguing (significant progress in my research, an interesting academic article, general news in the physics world) then I'll talk about it. For those interested, my graduate research is based in theoretical condensed matter physics with a general focus on the thermal effects on transport in magnetic systems (often called spintronics) using first principles calculations. I also have studied the thermodynamics of itinerant systems and the surface magnetization of the multiferroic FeTiO with linear M -to- P coupling. I'm starting to consider my post-graduation options with the goal of finding a post-doctoral appointment. I greatly enjoy teaching as well and plan to have that play a strong role in my future career. Other odds and ends The following are things I won't post about, but my profile wouldn't be complete without mentioning them. In addition to the above, I enjoy doing andor thinking about the following things improving my ability to communicate ideas, teaching, acting, directing, politics, reading, health and fitness, visual art, history, philosophy and learning about various religions. There's probably more that I'm forgetting, but I think I got my point across -) I'm an alumnus of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity. Music is a hugeinspirationfor me and I carry my passion for music everywhere I go. I owe a lot of that to the experiences I had within the Iota Kappa chapter.
