Jessie Daniels is Associate Professor at Hunter College, New York, NY. Daniels is the author of two books, including White Lies (Routledge, 1997) and Cyber Racism, (Rowman & Littlefield, 2009). She is also the author of a number of scholarly articles having to do with both dealing with race, gender/sexuality and various forms of media. She recently produced a short film about aging in East Harlem ("Growing Old in East Harlem," 2010) that is being used online and through face-to-face meetings to engage community members and influence policy makers. Her work about race, gender, sexuality and new media has appeared in the journals New Media & Society, Women’s Studies Quarterly, Gender & Society and Health Promotion & Practice. In addition to her work as an academic, Daniels also worked in the Internet industry. She maintains an academic blog (RacismReview) with Joe Feagin which has a monthly audience of over 200,000 readers. And, Daniels was recently named one of “20 Inspiring Women to Follow on Twitter,†by Forbes Magazine. Daniels' research interests include the social impact of digital media on social inequality, especially as this new media affects race, gender, sexuality. She's currently at work on several projects, including: 1) the Social Justice Sexuality Project, one of the largest ever studies (N=5,000) of LGBTQ people of color; 2) exploring the way homeless LGBTQ use mobile technologies; and, 3) an exploration of the ways the battle over reproductive justice and women's health movement is shifting online, with a particular focus on cloaked websites, such as TeenBreaks.com, which disguises the fact that it is a front for a pro-life group.
