Sue began as a classroom teacher of science and mathematics in Marshall County Kentucky. Sue was selected by NASA in as Kentuckys Teacher in Space Ambassador. She traveled across the state and nation sharing about NASAs free programs for teachers and students when Christa McAuliffe was lost with the Challenger in . She was recruited to Paducah Independent Schools and then onto the Kentucky Department of Education. While Serving as KY's State Science Supervisor, she began work with students and teachers statewide. She created and directed the first state-based Space Science Education Program serving teachers. During her KDE tenure, Sue was recruited by NASA to help them redesign and reform their education programs nationwide. Sue joined NASA in and served as Curriculum and Staff Development Specialist, and State-based Program Coordinator for the Aerospace Education Services Program (AESP). Sue coordinated NASA State-based Programming in all states for AESP and NEAT. She served as NASAs coordinator of the National Network of Educator Astronaut Teachers (NEAT). She supported the implementation of national standards in math, science, technology. Sue served in a supportliaison capacity for NASA with many national organizations such as the National Research Council, National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions, National Council of State Science Supervisors, and National Science Teachers Association. These organizations and several others collaborated with NASA in the partnership grant NLIST (Networking for Leadership Inquiry and Systemic Thinking). Sue served as co-Principal Investigator representing NASA during the entire seven years of active investigation and creation of Inquiry Science materials for grades K-.
