When people ask me what I do for a living, my first thought is to tell them, Its complicated. I used to be an ICU nurse, but now Im going back to school to become a nurse practitioner. Before nursing, I was a Web programmer and managed a team of developers before that, I narrowly avoided a career as a starving artist. Currently, on top of being a full-time graduate student, I maintain a position as a graduate teaching assistant with Washington State University in Spokane, Washington. In my position with the College of Nursing, I lecture to undergraduate nursing students in areas including community health, medicalsurgical nursing, and dosage calculation. For my practice transformation project, I have chosen to step a bit outside the realm of nursingand perhaps outside of healthcare altogether, although I dont believe it should beand address the use of food rewards within elementary school classrooms. In an effort to affect practice rather than policy, I have been working with several school districts within the State of Idaho, most notably within the Blaine County School District in Hailey, Idaho. The end-result of my inter-professional collaborative project will be a short animated sequence that depicts a normal daily cycle of hunger and satiety, followed by the same cycle with additional food offered throughout the day. Although difficult to articulate in writing, this concept is easily explained visually. Having spent the summer dusting off my long-lost artistic and technical talents, Ive begun work on this animation using the Adobe suite of products including Flash, Illustrator, After Effects, Photoshop, and Audition.
