Equally at home in a variety of settings, Paul Coleman enjoys a multi-faceted career as a composer, sound engineer, and teacher of composition and electronic music. As the Sound Director for the New York City based ensemble Signal, Paul has appeared at venues ranging from the Ojai Music Festival to the Bang on a Can Marathon and Le Poisson Rouge. Mr. Coleman has engineered and directed sound for numerous performances, working closely alongside composers such as Steve Reich, Michael Gordon, and Helmut Lachenmann. Of Mr. Coleman's sound direction The New York Times said "...the sound mixing was more creative than usual. When the score's textures were at their thickest, combinations of instruments were deployed to different speakers around the room, creating interesting spatial effects..." Mr. Coleman's own compositions have been performed at festivals and venues such as John Zorn's venue The Stone, the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA). February saw the premiere of his work Into Winters' Grey for soprano and large ensemble, commissioned by the Eastman School of Music's Musica Nova, premiered with Brad Lubman Conducting and Soprano Soloist Tony Arnold. Paul is currently on faculty at the State University of New York at Fredonia, where he teaches Composition and Computer Music. He has served twice as the Acting Director of The Eastman School of Music's Computer Music Center as a sabbatical replacement, in spring and spring . In the summer of , Paul joined the faculty of the Bang on a Can Summer Institute, where he was the head sound engineer and also taught composition fellows electronic and computer music techniques. Mr. Coleman is currently a PhD Candidate (ABD) at the Eastman School of Music, receiving a Ralph Jackno scholarship and two Belle Gitelman awards in composition, and holds B.M. and M.M. degrees from the University of Northern Colorado.
