As corporate vice president of the Education Products Group, L. Michael Golden's role is to carry out Microsoft Corp.'s vision of enabling access to quality education experiences for all through technology. He is also responsible for leading Microsoft's education strategy execution, driving education product development, business development and go-to-market efforts. Golden works collaboratively across three of the company's core groups: Platform Products and Services, Entertainment and Devices, and the Microsoft Business Division. Before assuming his current position, Golden worked in senior education administration as deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Office of Information and Educational Technology. In this capacity, he reported directly to the Pennsylvania Secretary of Education, spearheading strategy, policy and programs that affected more than 1.8 million pre-K—12 students, as well as postsecondary and higher education institutions and libraries. His accomplishments include formulating and implementing statewide education technology policies and initiatives. He envisioned and rolled out groundbreaking $250 million reforms to embed student-centered, inquiry-based, data-driven pedagogy in Pennsylvania's schools through connected classrooms, one-to-one computing environments and robust professional development for teachers and administrators. He also spearheaded policies to establish a standards-based system rooted in learner-centric, data-driven, customized and results-focused approaches to instruction across the state's schools to prepare students for the 21st century work force. Most recently, Golden was senior vice president of marketing and strategic planning at Pearson School, a global leader in educational publishing, assessment, information and services. While at the school, which is a part of Pearson Education Inc., he led major planning and administrative functions and activities, reporting directly to the company's CEO. Earlier in his career, Golden ran his own consulting company for 10 years, providing services in business development, strategic planning, marketing and corporate finance to education, media and consumer products companies. His accomplishments included serving as strategic counsel to a $12 billion media company expanding into educational technology. Golden holds a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania's Graduate School of Education with an MBA from Harvard Business School. He graduated cum laude from Williams College with a bachelor of arts in political science.
