Also known as: TheSuperions
The Superions came to Earth to take over the planet with delirious dance music. They started by taking over the bodies of B-52 frontman Fred Schneider, keyboard and electric drum player Noah Brodie, and programmer Dan Marshall, and producing an album's worth of Christmas music called Destination... Christmas! But seriously, folks, The Superions are Schneider's latest side project and his first actual band since founding The B-52's in Athens, GA with his pals Kate Pierson, Keith Strickland, and Cindy and Ricky Wilson. The band evolved out of Schneider's long friendship with Marshall and Brodie, residents of Orlando, FL. Although there is a Transformer character with the same name, The Superions are actually named after an obscure B-movie that Schneider recalled seeing in his misspent youth. Marshall and Brodie have been making music together for quite a while, but The Superions get-together marks their first step into the national limelight. In 2006, they played Schneider an instrumental track they'd been working on. It had a late-night tiki lounge feel; he recorded his spontaneous musings and they played it back. The references to low-hanging fruit and no tan lines made "Totally Nude Island" a hit on iTunes. The follow-up to their first single, put out by Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records of Athens, was a disco tune about shoplifting called "Who Threw That Ham At Me." That was an iTunes hit, too, so they kept going. According to their Twitter feed, Totally Nude Island was released on Halloween of 2008, so a Halloween album for 2009 became their next project. That album stalled out after two tunes, "Zombie Disco" and "Batbaby," but in keeping with the holiday theme, the trio began work on Destination... Christmas! Meanwhile, they released an eponymous digital EP, which also included "Those Sexy Saucer Gals." Destination... Christmas! came out in October of 2010 and is probably the most sexual Christmas record since Eartha Kitt's "Santa Baby." The Superions lay down dance-happy beats and reference cannibalism, the erotic use of candy canes, and drunken relatives on Destination... Christmas!, making it a perfect Christmas album for people who hate Christmas. The band is currently at work on a more straightforward album of dance music, but with Schneider providing the lyrics, it's likely that The Superions will turn disco inside-out in same way Schneider and The B-52s undermined traditional rock with their campy humor and energetic hijinks.j. poetallmusic
