Ive discovered that owners of growing businesses are so busy running their business that its tough for them to deal with all the new challenges their growth creates. Theyre so caught up in running the day-to-day and fighting fires that they end up stressed out, overwhelmed and frustrated. As they try to control everything in their business, they never have enough time to manage their growth or monitor the business vital signs. Next thing they know, performance falls off, they make expensive mistakes and profits turn to losses. On top of all that, theyre still working constantly. My work life went from delivering newspapers as a kid to being a Senior VP of Operations. Im a sort of business geek and love learning about companies and how they operate. The business hats Ive worn include finance, operations, and administration covering the range of HR, Production, Quality, Contracts, Purchasing, Accounting and even a stint running IT. I experienced growth at a company that was adding new people a month. It was challenging but fun too. Then a market downturn forced us to lay off people in one day. The fun turned to pain and I never wanted to have to see anyone go through something like that again.
