In the late 1880's, the legendary Back Bowls of Vail were forested and inhabited with stunning elk, herds of white-tailed dear, and other mountain creatures. In 1888, late summer lightening storms ignited the back bowl forests, and in a mere 4 days, they burned to the ground, never to return to this rocky, high-altitude environment. Early mountaineers told their grandchildren of the two-legged, hairy creatures seen fleeing from this tremendous fire. Mining settlers near Minturn Colorado also remembered this exodus of 'great snow apes', as they followed Gore Creek to the Eagle River, and up Beaver Creek to the fold of mountains near Redtail Camp. Beaver Creek Ski Resort opened in 1980 with 425 skiable acres, 4 chairlifts and 28 runs. In the first two years, the resort was often troubled with sudden appearances of these 'great snow apes'. Knowledge of the 'yeti' was quickly and swiftly checked by the local real estate community, and since 1982, rarely have 'yeti' been sighted.
