In May of 2009, I was asked to produce a half hour television program to be aired on SHAW Channel 4 and broadcast in Greater Vancouver and Victoria. This creative freedom was a dream come true, and we gathered some other filmmakers together to brainstorm about how to transform half hour of dead air into an effective, inclusive and empowering program. With a budget of zero dollars, but a lot of determination and drive, we developed “One World†a program that highlights the people who make positive social and environmental change. Determined that community television should enable the community to have “A voiceâ€, we recruited interested local filmmakers and concerned people and formed VcommunityTV to produce the show. The growth has been exponential, and our fall program includes five broadcast teams, a social media team, volunteer coordinators, fundraisers, policy makers… In addition to producing our own material, we support local students and organizations by broadcasting their 8-10 minute documentaries and welcoming them into our community. The list includes, but is not limited to; Capilano University, Langara College, BCIT, Kaleidoscope, CJSF radio, Media Co-op, Pull Focus, Environmental Youth Alliance, The Purple Thistle, and Gallery Gachet. We have started working with local musicians and artists, in collaboration with CJSF Radio to highlight some of Vancouver’s local talent. We believe that musicians and artists certainly contribute to positive social change. A half hour of empty air space has evolved. Since it’s inception, over 320,00 people have seen our program. It has become an inspiration to over 200 members and countless other people in the community. We are very proud of our accomplishments particularly as it is completely volunteer run. Our goal now is to further improve the quality, increase the audience base, develop a multimedia platform and continue to grow into a sustainable organization.
