It pre-dates water and sewer service (1912). Electricity was a retrofit in 1922. The concrete foundation and footings were poured in 1926 (the earliest "permit" that the city has on record). It was at this time that the basement was closed in. With the knowledge that the home pre-dates 1900, based upon hard data from permit/application records for later development in the immediate neighbourhood, the yet to be substantiated question is; does it pre-date Carleton School (1896) and the Inter-Urban tram line (1891)? Who was here, occupying "District Lot 50"? It wasn't Albine Woodcock, as he was in Marquette Manitoba on a "Western Canada Land Grant" (1891). Nor was it William or Elizabeth Pavier, as they held land grants of their own in Calgary Alberta. Land title archival records show that from 1889 to 1902 the "owner" was one Joseph Edward Pickles (Pighells). However Joseph is documented as residing in Brandford, Ontario in time for the 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses. Mr. Pickle's brother, William lived in New Westminster and may have had some involvement with the property given his geographic proximity to it. Joseph also held title to blocks 11, 19, and 20 of DL 50. It could have even been a Charles Pavier (assumed to be William Pavier's brother), who was in the area with a surveying camp and appears in the Canadian Census of 1891. Director, Renfrew Collingwood Community Art Gallery and Museum January 2009 – Present (2 years 5 months) Mission Statement The mission of Renfrew-Collingwood Community Art Gallery and Museum is to support the beneficial inclusion of fine art and history into community life. Statement of Purpose The purpose of Renfrew-Collingwood Community Art Gallery and Museum is to facilitate, promote, organize, and support cultural, art, historical, and family based activities and events for the educational and cultural enrichment and benefit of the community in which it serves. Audience Demographics The new venue that will open in East Vancouver will focus on targeting a sizable demographic base as it's patrons. The population served is wide and diverse, and includes the entire community, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, and spanning the age range from pre-natal to seniors. Programs & Activities Many and varied tools will be used to accomplish this mission and purpose: organizing and maintaining community history and heritage; art and language workshops; the promotion of the Renfrew Collingwood Multicultural Artist Network; a wide range of exhibits (hopefully) loaned on a rotating basis from the Vancouver Museum, and many community based family and youth outreach projects. Planned admission to the gallery and exhibits would be by donation, and use of the space as a venue for various events by "honourarium". Only local artists works would be displayed, and exhibits relevant to Renfrew-Collingwood's history, heritage and culture. Volunteer / Block Watch Captain, Collingwood Community Policing Centre October 1998 – Present The Joyce Station Area Planning Association, first opened the Collingwood Community Policing Centre in April of 1994 to serve the Collingwood-Renfrew Area. This was a new form of community policing never before seen in North America. Its goal: To bridge the gap between the local community, the city of Vancouver, and the Vancouver Police Department. It is the goal of our office to educate you in order to empower you to take responsibility for crime prevention in your community. Community policing is a results-oriented, community based system relying heavily on the cooperation of policing officers, volunteers, and community members. We believe that we can provide you with the tools to take a leadership role in reducing crime in your neighbourhood. www.collingwoodcpc.com Owner, The Camelot Group July 1989 – Present (21 years 11 months) Volunteer, Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary 2001 – 2005 (4 years) Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary is a registered non-profit society that rescues, rehabilitates and cares for unwanted, injured, orphaned, abused, neglected and abandoned exotic birds. Greyhaven actively promotes avian welfare and awareness in the community through educational seminars and presentations to local schools, colleges, clubs, and other organizations. Our goal to help people understand the level of devotion and commitment it takes to share one’s home with a companion bird. No member of Greyhaven receives monetary remuneration, including its Board of Directors. Our organization is solely operated by volunteers who generously devote their valuable time to the well being of the birds that are under the care and protection of Greyhaven. We are strongly committed to the welfare of our birds, and dedicate each and every day to providing the highest level of care. We rely entirely on donations and fundraising to defray costs. The challenge for Greyhaven is to find the resources to care for the ever-increasing number of birds entering its facility. There are over 100 birds in our care at all times. Due to the large numbers of birds and limited resources, we are forced to turn birds away almost daily. Medical expenses, food, cages, toys and essential equipment are ongoing expenses. Our current facility is inadequate. It is too small to house the number of birds in our care, it has a leaky roof and no quarantine facilities. We desperately need a new facility that can meet the demands of caring for these intelligent creatures. Greyhaven Exotic Bird Sanctuary was founded in 1998 by several dedicated individuals who recognized that there was a fundamental need for a safe haven for birds who were abused, neglected, abandoned, orphaned, or their caregiver could no longer look after their bird due to unforeseen circumstances.
