John R. Adler, Jr. (born 1954) is a Professor of Neurosurgery at Stanford University who specializes in the treatment of brain and spinal tumors. His primary area of academic interest involves the development of minimally invasive computerized tools for surgery. In this regard he is the father of the rapidly emerging field of image-guided irradiation. As a pioneer in the field of radiosurgery, he holds 7 United States patents and is an author on more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. In 1991, Professor Adler founded Accuray, a company which manufactures the Cyberknife, an image-guided radiosurgical instrument that noninvasively ablates tumors almost anywhere in the body. He served as Chief Executive Officer of Accuray from 1999 to 2002, and the Chief Medical Officer up until 2007.
