For decades I talked about coming to China. Now that dream has come true. After four exciting years of IP and innovation consulting at Innovationedge, I've accepted a position as Head of Intellectual Property at Asia Pulp and Paper in their Shanghai headquarters. My goal is to help them develop systems and culture to aggressively protect their IP and pursue innovation. I work with multiple companies and many bright inventors. So far it's been a great adventure. I love Shanghai and the chance to develop my Mandarin Chinese skills (so glad I studied it for fun in college at BYU). My mission at Innovationedge was to help others get better ROI on innovation and IP. I worked with teams of inventors, marketers, and business leaders to identify opportunities, define strategy, and create IP. I continue to draw upon my experiences as a professor, inventor (100+ US patents), patent agent, former Corporate Patent Strategist at Kimberly-Clark Corporation, and consultant at Innovationedge. I'm also active with AIChE, where I was Chair of the Forest Bioproducts Division, 2007-11. I've described some of my approaches in a book, Conquering Innovation Fatigue by Jeff Lindsay, Cheryl Perkins, and Mukund Karanjikar (John Wiley & Sons, 2009 - see http://tinyurl.com/nofatigue). A unique aspect is the focus on innovation at the personal level, where barriers to innovation abound. One of my specialties is helping organizations get more for their money by using strategic low-cost intellectual asset tools, including creative defensive publications and IA generation sessions, to craft an estate in a targeted area. We also work with organizational systems to debug problems and strengthen the culture of innovation. One of my favorite things is working with a group of sharp people to help them realize what they can create with the right strategy and purpose. Proactive IP generation can work wonders and increase ROI. I even throw in a magic trick here and there when I'm in a good mood.
