When my mother named me "Heather Alys", my first-generation German Catholic grandfather asked "what kind of a name is Heather". Alys, pronouced A-lease, is certainly old German, however, Heather . . . well, not so much. And from that very day he called me "Hedy", pronouced head-ee, a german nickname for Hedwig. Growing up my mother always said "find something constructive to do". For me that meant creating and making things, for her I am sure it meant to clean my room. I have tried many medias of art, but find that I keep coming back to the sewing machine. I just love textiles . . . the feel, the colors, the textures. Although I do make couture clothing, my interests lay mainly in home decor, like curtains, pillows, and especially custom slipcovers and baby bedding. For many years, I kept sewing for myself because I thought that if it became my "work" then I would lose the passion for the craft. However, in recent times I have began teaching sewing classes privately and in a classroom and have found that sharing my passion for sewing with others has been most rewarding.read more ...read less ...
