I've always cared about protecting the public interest keeping governments in check and ensuring citizens have a fair say in decisions that affect them. That's why years ago I chose to become a journalist. After earning my degree in journalism, I reported on politics, the environment, corporate responsibility and how citizens can help create the world they want. After five years in newsrooms, I moved over to the non-profit sector, leading the communications for one of Canada's most innovative and effective advocacy groups. As the Dogwood Initiative's Communications Director I became a frequent media commentator on public interest issues and a respected expert on citizen engagement and mobilization, speaking dozens of times to audiences of grantmakers, environmental professionals, energy industry employees, teachers, students and communications experts. Much to my delight, I'm now back in the journalism world full-time as Deputy Editor of DeSmog Blog and DeSmog Canada a perfect marriage of my interest in the public interest, my love of writing and my belief that environmental issues are one of the greatest challenges of our time. I'm also a freelance travel and health writer for WestJet's Up Magazine, IMPACT magazine and the Calgary Herald. In , I became an accredited member of the Travel Media Association of Canada. read more ...
