Dan Smith's entertainment career began while serving in the United States Air Force, where he worked in print media and edited and published many of the Air Force's top newspapers. Following his service, Smith turned to broadcast media, where he contributed news, entertainment and sports features through such diverse agencies as Associated Press Television News and BET Nightly News. His foray into original program production started with the creation of ACTV 13, a community channel that launch in 1995 with original local programming for U.S. military bases in Japan, and then he turned to producing original content for broadcast in Japan, the U.S., and Europe. Among his original ACTV programs were "The Good Samaritan" ("Chui Tashiki Daishiki"), "Sports Talk," and "Jam TV," featuring Alice SiDaii. Among his early successes was the self-hosted reality show "Black Life In Japan," which became a global cult favorite and earned him an appearance on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno." Smith then developed the syndicated half-hour entertainment program "Access E," which aired in Japan and on several U.S. and European television networks. He also served as a producer on 13 episodes of the "Champagne Chef" culinary show for the Colours Network in America. Smith then produced a series of TV commercials for Yokohama City, titled "Yokohama - My Choice," as well as "My Life In Japan" segments for the TV Kanagawa and Itscom Cable Network. After producing the acclaimed one-hour documentary "Fandemonium -- Chasing Michael Jackson" ("Shirarezaru Nanoka Kan") for Fox Television, Smith went on to create the weekly entertainment show "Fox Backstage Pass," which will surpass the 300th Episode mark in APril 2015, and has served as Executive Producer/Producer on several other Fox original programs such as "Celebrity Station," "Japan's Next Beauty," featuring Norika Fujiwara, "Kirei Yoga," and documentaries "We Remember You Michael," and "The Red Cross Story The Battle of Solferino," which have aired on Fox Television, Fox Movies Premium, Fox Sports and National Geographic channels in Japan. In addition to television programs, Smith has produced several significant media events with some of the world's top stars, including special red carpet premiere's for Warner Entertainment Japan (Will Smith's "I Am Legend"), Universal/Toho Towa (Liam Neeson, Taylor Kitsch and Rihanna's "Battleship"), the Fox Summer Party in Okinawa, an event that attracted over 8,000 people, and "The Walking Dead Tokyo Tower Zombie Storm" which earned him the top Gold Award in the 2014 PromaxBDA's Special Promotions Category.
