What is Charles Sims's famous for?
Charles Henry Sims was a British painter of portraits and landscapes and of decorative paintings with elements of whimsy and the fantastic. He became "a leading Edwardian painter," but after the traumatic years of World War I his work became increasingly idiosyncratic and controversial. In 1920, he was appointed Keeper, or head, of the Royal Academy Schools, a post he was eventually forced to resign in 1926. At the same time, he became estranged from his wife and children. Sims' final paintings, the Spiritual Ideas, were dramatically unlike anything he had painted before, to some viewers his "most beautiful works," but to others highly disturbing. He took his own life at the age of fifty-five.. You can find more here.
