Also known as: Mingus
Charles Mingus was o ne of the most important figures in twentieth century American music, whose music is still way ahead of its time, more modern than most of the sounds you hear today. A virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer, he recorded over a hundred albums and wrote over three hundred scores, the second-largest legacy in American composition after Ellington. Mingus received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, The Smithsonian Institute, and two from the Guggenheim Foundation. The New Yorker wrote "For sheer melodic and rhythmic and structural originality, his compositions may equal anything written in western music in the twentieth century." After his death in of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, the NEA provided grants to Let My Children Hear Music, Inc. to catalog all of Mingus' works. The microfilms of these works were then given to the Music Division of the New York Public Library where they are currently available for study. In , The Library of Congress acquired the complete Mingus Collection, which was a first for a jazz composer and a first for an African-American. The critical and popular success of the repertory bands, Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, and Mingus Orchestra, give testament to the artistry and longevity of Mingus compositions, now further extended by the young people who are exploring and embracing his music through published charts, school courses, workshops, and the new C harles Mingus High School C ompetition.
