Rap music, and the greater hip hop culture, permeate everything, and have done for decades now; to the degree where you could hardly parse out the influence. So much is its impact a given, that you could pretty much fairly define our western popular culture in pre and post-hip hop terms.
While some are still basking in the cheap tinsel glow of so-called “Oscar Gold,” others have turned their attentions to those who would scoff at such a meager, symbolic substitute; those whose cars, houses, shoes, toilets, and neckties are all made of only the finest and rarest of ores and stones, and who care not one whit for your little “Best Adapted Screenplay” trinket.
Those of us old enough to remember, and silly enough in our youths to have cared at the time, can barely believe its been 30 years since Vince McMahon (PeekYou profile here) first thrust upon the world Wrestlemania; his WWE‘s (then WWF’s) pay-per-view bonanza, “pro-wrestling Super Bowl,” and spectacle to end all spectacles.
Three words reign supreme above all others on the Internet this weekend; they are not “Major League Baseball,” nor “Saturday Night Live,” nor are they even “Home Box Office.” This weekend — as will be the case with weekends for the next couple of months, we’re guessing (sort of like football season for nerds) — belongs to Game of Thrones; debuting its fourth season on Sunday.
March means different things to different folks. For those of us living in the northern hemisphere it means the onset of spring. For some it may mean St. Patrick’s revelry, and for strange others it may perhaps invite a bout of Ides of March dread.
