We've also included a few of our own favorites for you to enjoy. The Appalachian Trail Have you ever hiked part of the Appalachian Trail? Did you use a diary to record your progress? Take photographs of what you saw? Write poetry about your experience? One person who did all of these things was Earl Shaffer, the first person to walk the entire Appalachian Trail in one continuous hike. Shaffer had no expert advice, no previous footsteps to follow, or even guidebooks to help him. This Flickr group is dedicated to collecting your photographs, stories, and memories about hiking the Appalachian Trail. Upload your photos with written descriptions of your experiences on the trail and map them, using the Flickr Map function, to see them on the exhibition Web site. On the Water: Snapshots in Time Whether you live in the desert, on the beach or somewhere in between, what happens On the Water affects your daily life. We want to know how. This group is dedicated to collecting the images and descriptions of maritime activities across the United States of America in conjunction with our On the Water online exhibition. Maritime activity includes shipping and port-related work, ship and boat building, fishing and fish processing, recreational cruising, and many other water-related enterprises, all of which have far-reaching impacts. Share your photos of maritime activities that affect you or your community and don't forget to map it using Flickr Maps to see it on the Snapshots in Time section of the On The Water online exhibition. Star-Spangled Banner Share Your Story Project What does the American flag stand for? What does it mean to you? Is it a sacred symbol? Has it meant something important to you? Does it represent you? Have you ever used the flag to make a statement? We want to hear from you! By submitting your photo and caption to our Flickr group, your story could become part of the flag mosaic featured on the National Museum of American History’s Star-Spangled Banner Web site. Your image can be a photo of you or of anything that represents what the flag means to you.
