He was a finalist for the Investigative Reporters and Editors award, won eight regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, nine Mid-America Emmy Awards, three Missouri Broadcasters Awards, the Kansas Broadcasters Award and numerous awards from the Kansas City Press Club. Steve's work has been featured on the CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes and Court TV. It has resulted in new state laws, reforms to the court system, the clean-up of illegal dumps, criminal investigations, and the resignations of powerful public servants. In 2008, Steve exposed a Wal-Mart corporate policy that required hundreds of tons of safe and edible food to be thrown out each year. After months of his reporting, Wal-Mart changed its policy and now sends that food to charitable organizations in need. His Emmy-award winning series "Captive Victims" uncovered the rampant problem of staff-on-inmate sexual assault inside the Illinois Department of Corrections. In 2004, Steve received national attention and acclaim for a ground-breaking, seven-part series that exposed law enforcement's inability to combat internet predators -- adults who try to sexually assault minors after seducing them in Internet chat rooms. After his reports, Kansas City became home to a regional computer forensic crime lab and numerous on-line policing efforts. Steve graduated from Milwaukee's Marquette University with a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism. In 1997, the Hearst Journalism Foundation named Steve one of the top young reporters in the country.
